How to inspect DCM, DICOM files

DICOM contains pixels plus patient, device, and exam information. This tool is only for single-file access and education, never diagnosis, treatment, or clinical decisions.

  1. On a trusted device, choose one .dcm or .dicom file.
  2. Review transfer syntax, rows, columns, bit depth, and essential tags.
  3. Preview grayscale pixels when the uncompressed format is supported.
  4. Remove names, IDs, and exam dates before sharing screenshots.

What this tool helps with

  • Temporary single-file inspection without an imaging workstation
  • Pixel preview alongside essential tags
  • The file is parsed inside this browser tab and is not uploaded to FreeTool to use the tool.

Compatibility and limitations

  • Not a certified medical device and not for diagnosis
  • This version previews common uncompressed 8/16-bit grayscale pixels; compressed syntax, series, SR, segmentation, and multiframe objects are incomplete
  • Web display does not replace a calibrated workstation or radiology report

Frequently asked questions

Can it open DCM files from a CT disc?

You can try one DCM file; DICOMDIR, series ZIPs, bundled executables, and encrypted content are not supported yet.

Why do I see tags but no image?

The file may use an unsupported compressed transfer syntax or may not be a pixel image object.

Is patient information uploaded?

Processing is local, but DICOM itself is sensitive; use a trusted device and share screenshots carefully.
