When to use it

Re-encode a decodable video as MP4 using quality and audio-bitrate controls. Compression is lossy re-encoding. It cannot guarantee smaller size, perfect losslessness, and identical quality at once. Estimated size is not a promise.

Practical example

For a 200 MB 4K60 clip meant for chat, reduce to 1080p or 720p before choosing medium quality. A 10 MB target can only be estimated, not guaranteed.

Steps

  1. Choose video and record its size, duration, and dimensions.

  4. Compare sizes and review picture, sound, and sync completely.

Choosing parameters

  • Quality / CRF: a higher value is commonly smaller with less detail
  • Audio bitrate

Test a short or lower-resolution sample first. Do not raise bitrate, sample rate, frame rate, or resolution merely to look “clearer”; re-encoding cannot recover information missing from the source.

Real limits and device requirements
