How to use IFC / BIM Model Viewer: a practical file-check workflow

Open a real file with IFC / BIM Model Viewer and check important fields, output, format boundaries, and local privacy.

When to use it

Use this read-only tool when you received an IFC from a consultant or contractor, do not have Revit/Navisworks, and only need to confirm storeys, elements, and properties. IFC is an exchange format for building information models. This viewer supports quick design, construction, and quantity-surveying review, not formal model validation or takeoff.

Practical example

For a small model containing Building, Storey, IfcWall, and IfcDoor, open level two in the tree, select one door, and compare GlobalId, type, elevation, and property sets. Correct geometry with empty properties usually points to the export configuration.

Steps

  1. Choose an unencrypted .ifc model.
  2. Let the browser build the spatial tree and geometry.
  3. Locate a storey or element and inspect its IFC type, GlobalId, and properties.
  4. Use hide, isolate, and fit-view controls to review an area.

Result checklist

  • The tree contains Project, Site/Building, and Storey nodes
  • Sample wall, door, and beam GlobalIds to detect identity loss after export
  • Confirm units, bounding box, and storey elevations
  • Isolate one element and verify its geometry matches the selected properties

First troubleshooting checks

The model remains on parsing

Test a smaller IFC first; large models can exceed browser memory, so close other tabs and retry on desktop Chrome/Edge.

The tree appears but geometry does not

Use fit view and check for huge coordinates; custom or corrupt geometry may also fail triangulation.

Real limitations

  • Very large models depend on device memory and GPU capacity
  • No full schema validation, clash detection, or cost calculation
  • Vendor-specific geometry and properties may be incomplete

Privacy and file safety

Parsing runs in the current browser tab and the file is not uploaded to FreeTool to use this tool. Still use a trusted device for customer, engineering, research, or medical material. Keep the original unchanged and clear downloads, screenshots, and browser data after a shared device.
