How to use EDI X12 Viewer and Validator: a practical file-check workflow

Open a real file with EDI X12 Viewer and Validator and check important fields, output, format boundaries, and local privacy.

When to use it

Use this read-only tool when a partner sent a long 850, 810, 856, 835, or 837 message and you need to de-identify it, inspect envelopes, and locate structural errors. X12 is used in supply chain, logistics, and healthcare exchange. This tool parses delimiters and envelopes but does not replace a trading-partner implementation guide or compliance audit.

Practical example

For an 850 purchase order, pair ISA/IEA, GS/GE, and ST/SE, confirm ST01=850, then compare SE01 and control numbers. Business meaning in PO1 quantity and price still requires the partner implementation guide.

Steps

  1. Choose an .edi/.x12/.txt file or paste a de-identified message.
  2. Confirm detected element, component, and segment delimiters.
  3. Expand ISA, GS, and ST envelopes and search segments or elements.
  4. Review control numbers, segment counts, and structural findings, then check the partner guide.

Result checklist

  • ISA has fixed length sufficient to detect all three delimiters
  • ISA13/IEA02, GS06/GE02, and ST02/SE02 control numbers match
  • SE01 equals the actual segment count from ST through SE
  • Character set, release, and transaction type match partner rules

First troubleshooting checks

The whole file becomes one unknown segment

Line wrapping, truncation, or transcoding can break fixed ISA positions; obtain a fresh copy of the transmitted payload.

Syntax passes but the partner rejects it

A generic parser lacks partner-required segments, code lists, and situational rules; inspect the 997/999 and implementation guide.

Real limitations

  • Not every release, industry, or partner implementation guide is included
  • A structural pass is not HIPAA, financial, or business-semantic compliance
  • Binary attachments, encryption, and AS2 transport are out of scope

Privacy and file safety

Parsing runs in the current browser tab and the file is not uploaded to FreeTool to use this tool. Still use a trusted device for customer, engineering, research, or medical material. Keep the original unchanged and clear downloads, screenshots, and browser data after a shared device.
