Work Exhaustion Assessment: source, items, and scoring

Review the source, item design, scoring rules, and responsible use of Work Exhaustion Assessment.

What this assessment measures

Use the 13 personal and work-related burnout items from the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory.

Source and scoring design

  • This tool uses the six personal and seven work-related CBI items. Each response converts to 0, 25, 50, 75, or 100, and each scale is the mean of its items.
  • The final work-related item asks about energy during leisure time and therefore must be reverse scored.
  • A higher score indicates more recent exhaustion signals but cannot distinguish work design, sleep, physical illness, medication, caregiving, or other causes. Consider duration and functional impairment when seeking support.

How to answer

Complete all 13 items using the full response scale. Follow the time frame in the instructions, answer for your usual experience, and avoid choosing an ideal answer.

Dimensions

  • Personal burnout:Physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion regardless of source.
  • Work-related burnout:Fatigue and exhaustion attributed to work.

Source
